Welcome to the 226th Critical Care Reviews Newsletter, bringing you the best critical care research and open access articles from across the medical literature over the past seven days. The big news this week is the announcement of the speakers to date for the Critical Care Reviews Meeting 2017 and the opening of delegate registration.
Once again, our speakers come from across the world. Mervyn Singer (London) will explain the new sepsis 3.0 definition, which is already the most downloaded paper in the history of JAMA. Greet Van den Berghe (Belgium) will present the PEPaNIC trial, comparing early with late initiation of parenteral nutrition in critically ill children. Gonzalo Hernandez (Madrid) will explain his study examing the role of high flow nasal oxygen in extubated patients at low risk for reintubation. Returning for the second year in a row, Anthony Gordon will speak about his latest, and yet to publish, LEOPARDS trial, investigating levosimendan in septic shock. In addition, travelling from the world famous George Institute in Sydney, Australia, is John Myburgh, and from Virginia, USA, Paul Marik. The faculty is not yet complete and will continue to grow as the best critical care trials are published during the year. Fittingly, as we announce our return to the magnificent Titanic Centre in Belfast for #CCR17, today marks the day RMS Titanic sailed on her maiden voyage.
The highlight of this week's newsletter is the publication of the ALPS study, evaluating antiarrhythmics in cardiac arrest. There are many fantastic review articles this week, but if you only have time to read one, try either this paper on Intensive Care Unit Acquired Weakness or this paper on the standard of care of patients with ARDS.
I haven't had time to put together the Topic of the Week yet, so I'll publish this tomorrow.

Meetings
The not-for-profit foundation, Fundación de Cuidados Críticos, formed by physicians working in the ICU of the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires, are holding their 6th annual symposium on critical care in Buenos Aires. This is a multidisciplinary 3 day symposium dealing with several key topics in current critical care. It is free of charge to attend and will be held in the Palais Rouge, a beautiful three stories building in Buenos Aires, Argentina. ,
Day 1 (April 13th) deals with the ABCDE approach, post ICU syndrome, family involvement in everyday practice and the best strategies to minimize sedation and ICU delirium, as well as a separate session on shock and an ultrasound workshop. The whole evening will be spent dealing with current and up-to-date critical care nursing issues. Day 2 (April 14th) deals with pulmonology, new ways to monitor mechanical ventilation, capnography, electrical impedance tomography, and other key issues. The guest speaker is Arnaud Thille from France. Other topics on day 2 include burns and the ERAS approach to post-operative patients. Day 3 (April 15th) continues with pulmonology and other critical care issues, as well as nutritional support, and quality improvement in ICU.
Further details are available from the website and the programme can be downloaded here.
The next SMACC Conference is on June 13th to 16th, in Dublin, Ireland. Registration opened on October 28th, sold out in a few hours, and closed again. Luckily, there are two further smaller batches of tickets available on Wednesday December 2nd and Wednesday February 3rd. With world leading academics and high profile clincians from the FOAMed critical care world, this conference fuses knowledge, dynamism and enthusiasm with an altruisitic desire to be the best we can be for the benefit of our patients. It's the most fun, modern critical care conference in the world. If you've been lucky enough to register for #smaccDUB, the presentations from SMACC Chicago, which are now online at Intensive Care Network, will give you an idea as to what to expect.

The Irish Critical Care-Clinical Trials Group (ICC-CTG) host a two hour meeting in conjunction with the Intensive Care Society of Ireland Annual Meeting in the AVIVA Stadium on Saturday June 11th and two Clinical Research Foundation Workshops on Sunday June 12th & Monday June 13th. A distinguished international panel of guests will be present to demonstrate how a CTG functions and what each unit needs to know. In addition, this meeting provides the opportunity to network and keep up to speed with the ICC-CTG's current and future trials portfolio.
A networking dinner will be hosted on Monday 13th June in Sophie's Restaurant at The Dean Hotel. These meetings will be immediately before SMACC Dub and may also be of interest to those visiting Dublin. The registration fee is €50 and includes lunch & refreshments throughout the day. Book before 1st May to avail of the Early Bird option of €30 (limited availability).
Please contact Louise at lburke@ucd.ie to register for the meeting and meal.
The Summer Scientific Meeting of the Intensive Care Society is on Saturday June 11th at the Aviva Stadium, the home of Irish Rugby and Soccer. The theme is toxicology and features several of the SMACC faculty who will be in town that weekend. Registration hasn't yet opened, but the meeting programme is available here.
The 13th Annual Critical Care Symposium is on April 28th and 29th in Manchester Town Hall, England. This meeting aims to bring together world renowned speakers for a conference outside London and to provide a conducive environment allowing informal discussion. Most importantly, this event provides good quality education covering various topics in Intensive Care at an affordable price.
The 9th UK Critical Care Research Forum is being held on 23rd – 24th June 2016 at the Sage Gateshead, with over 20 research proposals as well as sessions on adaptive trial design, international collaborations in critical care trials and patient-centred research. There is also a Forum dinner at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. Registration is now open.
