Newsletter 169 / March 1st 2015
Welcome to the 169th Critical Care Reviews Newsletter, bringing you the best critical care research published in the past week, plus a wide range of free full text review articles, guidelines, commentaries, editorials, study critiques, correspondence and case reports from hundreds of clinical and scientific journals.
The highlights of this weeks newsletter are randomized controlled trials investigating hypertonic saline in traumatic haemorrhage and four-factor prothrombin complex concentrate for the urgent reversal of vitamin K antagonists, as well as review articles on mechanical ventilation for ARDS, hypercapnoea, levosimendan and fibrinogen concentrate in acquired bleeding.
This week's Topic of the Week is the second of a two part series on the GRADE guidelines, starting with a paper on rating the quality of evidence in tomorrow's Paper of the Day.
There is also some news regarding the 2015 and 2016 Critical Care Reviews Meetings
Upcoming Meetings
The vodcasts from the 2015 meeting have begun to go online, with two talks available this week. Dr Aoibhin Hutchinson (Belfast) talks about the Fragility Index, whilst Dr Niklas Nielsen (Sweden) discusses his TTM trial.
The venue and date for the Critical Care Reviews Meeting 2016 have been finalised. The event will be held at the stunning, new multi-million pound Titanic Centre, birthplace of RMS Titanic, on Friday January 29th. If you haven't yet attended this modern, niche meeting reviewing the biggest studies of the year, then put this date in your diary. Both delegate and speaker feedback from previous meetings has been incredibly positive, allowing the event to grow and attract chief investigators for the biggest critical care trials. The Titanic Centre is just minutes from Belfast City Airport, with a hotel within 3 minutes walking distance and a 20 minute walk from the city centre, including the Cathedral Quarter, Belfast's cultural centre full of great restaurants and pubs. Talks are given in the setting of the rebuilt famous staircase from the great ship, while both the hugely popular "informal chat" session and dinner overlook the floodlite slipways where Titanic and Olympic were launched. Further details will emerge over the coming months.
SMACC Chicago
The next SMACC conference will be held June 23rd to 26th, in Chicago, USA. Just like the Critical Care Reviews Meeting, this is a not-for-profit event, run by a team interested in sharing knowledge in a fun, modern way. It's a conference like no other. Further details will be out soon on the SMACC website.
Critical Care Horizons
Critical Care Horizons is a fresh new voice in the critical care literature, offering thought-provoking, cutting-edge commentary and opinion papers, plus state-of-the-art review articles. The journal is free to publish with and free to read, opening authorship opportunity to all. The energetic editorial board consists of a deliberate mix of clinicians active in social media and world renowned academics, all driven by a desire to improve the care we offer our patients, and operate without financial gain or incentive. A call for papers has been issued, so if you have something interesting to say, and can say it in an engaging manner, please get in touch.
COI - I am the editor-in-chief of this new journal, but work in a voluntary capacity, as do all the editors.
