Newsletter 156 / November 30th 2014
Welcome to the 156th Critical Care Reviews Newsletter, bringing you the best critical care research published in the past week, plus a wide range of free full text review articles, guidelines, commentaries, editorials, study critiques, correspondence and case reports from hundreds of clinical and scientific journals. This week's highlights include a RCT on prehospital cooling for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, a phase 1 Ebola virus vaccine trial, a series on critical care infections from BMC Infectious Diseases and several papers from this weekend's International Fluid Academy Meeting in Antwerp, published in Anaesthesiology Intensive Care. These articles form the bulk of this week's Topic of the Week, on fluid therapy, starting with a paper on fluid overload, de-resuscitation, and outcomes in critically ill or injured patients in tomorrow's Paper of the Day.
The excellent Minerva Anestesiologica journal moved to a subscription model at the start of 2013, but has belatedly provided delayed access to articles published one year prior. Therefore, I've encluded the review articles currently available for the first 11 months of 2013. On a similar theme, another excellent journal featured weekly in the newsletter, Critical Care, is moving to an open access model in January, so I'll be able to send you their best output every week. If you only have time to read one paper this week, then you are spolit for choice. Tomorow's paper of the day would be my first choice, with alternatives being this paper by Wolfe, on the circulatory patho-physiology of anaesthesia, or on a different theme, this article by Scapigliati, on the best timing for defibrillation in shockable cardiac arrest.
Upcoming Meetings
Critical Care Reviews Meeting 2015
It's just 8 weeks until the 2015 Critical Care Reviews Meeting, on Friday January 23rd, reviewing the hottest critical care trials of 2014. The programme is available and online registration is open.
SMACC Chicago
The next SMACC conference will be held June 23rd to 26th, in Chicago, USA. It's a conference like no other. Further details, including the programme and registration, are available on the SMACC website.
