Newsletter 119 / March 14th 2014

Welcome

Hello Rob

Welcome to the 119th Critical Care Reviews Newsletter, bringing you the best critical care research published in the past week, plus a wide range of free full text review articles, guidelines, commentaries and editorials from over 300 clinical and scientific journals. It's an abbreviated newsletter this week, due to the SMACCgold conference beginning next week, which I'll be travelling over the weekend.

In news, the FDA have issued a warning regarding the use of doripenam in ventilator-associated pneumonia. This week's research studies include interventional studies on physical rehabilitation post critical illness, and acetylcysteine for acute exacerbations of COPD; meta analyses address the new oral anticoagulants and outcomes from ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms; observational studies include investigations on steroids for COPD exacerbations, surgical checklists, prognosis post cardiac arrest, and diaphragmatic atrophy in critical illness.

Editorials address MERS-CoV and legal aspects of anaesthesia and intensive care; commentaries focus on learning environments and research conduct, plus there is one case report on hepatic encephalopathy. Amongst the clinical review articles are papers on cerebral oxygenation during hyperthermia, heart failure post LVAD placement, pulmonary microbiology, paediatric nutrition, contrast-induced nephropathy, neonatal AKI, temperature monitoring, perioperative coagulopathy, inflammation and infection, post partum haemorrhage and the APACHE scoring system.
